Traders in Nakuru risk jail time for selling biscuits, sweets, cakes and an assortment other snacks associated if a proposed ban on their sale is effected.

According to the Ministry of Health, several samples taken from popular lollipops, cakes, cookies and mandazi for analysis tested positive for marijuana.

In a letter addressed to all the counties, the ministry wants all the counties to prohibit the sale of these items and declare them as illegal to safeguard on the health of children. 

Confirming the receipt of the circular addressed to the County Government of Nakuru, public health officer Samuel King’ori regretted the fact that people have resulted to such techniques that he says will ruin lives of many schoolchildren. 

“It is so unfortunate that people have resulted to such techniques which are not only a violation of the law but also against logic,"he said.

The health officer said that the county government will ensure such substances are not sold to safeguard children.

“We are soon beginning to carry out searches in all parts of the county to ensure that this business comes to an end and we will take severe action against those apprehended,” said King’ori.
