The mob wanted to lynch them after they allegedly stole from an M-Pesa shop on Tuesday afternoon.

Fredrick Kaniaru, 17, and James Ndungu, 18, were found out to have stolen airtime worth Sh 6, 000 belonging to George Kinuthia.

It is alleged that the two stole the airtime when the attendant went to find a change for them.

It is alleged that the boys entered the counter, stole the airtime and left without waiting for their change.

This aroused the suspicion of the trader who when he came back did not find the boys.

“It is at that time when I checked the counter only to find that my airtime has been swept away,” said Kinuthia.

“I raised an alarm and immediately launched a manhunt for the two, who were caught while trying to board a Matatu,” he added.

Witeithie police rescued the two in the hands of the angry mob who wanted to burn them. The two were locked up at the police post where on questioning, they were found to be high school students from a local secondary school in Ruiru.

Witeithie police post commander John Gakui said that the crime involving high school children has risen. Gakui said that the ongoing teachers strike has attributed to high rise of crime by students.

“Most of the children are idle and thus they involve themselves in queer behaviour which lands them in trouble, “said Gakui.
