A cross section of Rhonda residents now want the police to arrest individuals who have attained the age 18 years and above but do not have national identification cards.

The residents Tuesday said such a move would help curb crime and ensure more people register as voters in the area.

"It is very disheartening that many of our youths do not even have IDs despite having attained the maturity age. We want the police to help us address this issue. In doing so, we will also be ensuring that calls to register as voters is also realised," noted Joseph Karangi.

His sentiments were echoed by Mary Khavere who said that crime rates in Rhonda had risen partly because many youths do not have IDs.

"As residents we are concerned that our young men and women do not even have IDs.What gainful economic activity can someone without such a vital document engage in if not crime," she queried.

Tom Ochieng on his part said that the ongoing voter registration exercise would be futile if stern action is not taken against several youths who are yet to apply for IDs and are only wallowing in alcoholism.

"It is foolhardy to preach voter registration to someone who has no ID and who wakes up and sleep at a drinking den.If the police do not move in to round them up and warn them then even the voter registration project is an exercise in futility," he added.
