The National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) has moved to dismiss claims that they have positioned police officers along roads to check and penalise users of banned plastic materials.

This comes after reports that police officers were spotted on Monday making random stops with NEMA officials to check for any plastic bags in cars.

NEMA communications director Evans Nyabuto said his body has not sent any such police officers since they only work under KeNHA and NTSA.

"We have not issued an order of the inspection of cars by traffic police. Traffic police work under NTSA and KENHA," he said.

The agency clarified that they have not begun any arrests yet, and that they will issue a statement regarding the disposal of plastic bags.

"Today we are all over the country with much focus on awareness creation. The full implementation begins tomorrow," NEMA said through their Twitter handle on Monday.

The clarification therefore means that any officer who has arrested or solicited money from plastic product users was out to con Kenyans without NEMA's authority.
