Farmers in Sankuri and Balich areas of Garissa County are counting losses after River Tana burst its banks, destroying crops.
The losses are attributed to the ongoing heavy rains, with the farmers now left helpless as they desperately watch their crops get sub-merged in the raging flood waters.
Several entrant farmers decried the floods as a massive setback that shuddered their only remaining hope of livelihood after months of drought that wiped away all their animals.
Some of the cash crops submerged in the floods include tomatoes, pawpaws and assorted vegetables that were nearing harvesting before the calamity landed.
“The rains caught us off guard. We are still shocked to find our entire farms get submerged in flood waters. We cannot even salvage the few crops, leave alone our farm tools,” stated one of the affected farmers.
The heavy rains that began on Saturday have caused massive losses in most parts of Garissa County, leaving the residents with fading hopes.
