County’s Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) Secretary Noor Bardad said several schools in the county are likely to be closed this week due to lack of teachers.

Mr. Bardad said the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has transferred non -local teachers from the region following an attack on February 16 at Qarsa Primary School.

The attack left three non-local teachers dead and since then non-local teachers working in the region have been demanding to be transferred to safer areas.

Mr. Bardad who was speaking to journalists in Wajir Town over the weekend said by Saturday, more than 200 teachers had been transferred to other areas.

While criticizing the move by TSC, the KNUT secretary wondered why TSC was transferring teachers from areas not located near the border.

He said learning should continue in areas such as Wajir North, Eldas, and Wajir West which are not near the border adding that security should be beefed up along the border towns to guarantee the security of non-local and local teachers.

“In Batalu Primary School, all the teachers have left and only the head teacher has remained. I am really afraid that by Monday we will be forced to close some schools since most of them now lack teachers.”

“We demand immediate action as far as the education of these children is concerned. Our children have a right to education,” said Mr. Bardad.
