Farmers in Kisumu County have been asked to practice crop rotation to save their land from depletion of mineral resources.

The farmers have also been urged to apply the usage of natural forms of fertilisers as opposed to the artificial or modern ones.

Kisumu County Executive in charge of Agriculture Samuel Orot said that crop rotation helps in maintaining the land’s rich minerals by adding more minerals in the soil.

Speaking during an agricultural extravaganza in Nyahera in Kisumu West Sub County on Friday, Orot noted that most farmers in the region only grow one type of crop in their farms during the planting seasons.

“In Kisumu, farmers mostly practice one type of crop farming, which in most cases is maize or sugarcane for commercial farmers. You find that this reduces what they yield from their farm which in turn ends up to poor harvests,” said the agriculture executive.

He urged the farmers to adopt the natural forms of fertiliser saying that they had richer nutrients and minerals and had no adverse side effects after using for a longer period.

Orot said that it was time for the farmers to produce enough food for the county and even exports to other counties and countries.
