50 police officers in Kenya commit suicide yearly following hard treatment from cruel bosses, work stress and unhappiness among themselves, a psychologist has said.
Psychologist and lecturer Jane Ngatia told a local paper on Sunday that the officers are not trained on how to psychologically deal with their problems.
“Police men and women are exposed to so much stress and they have no training on how to deal with the stress,” Ngatia said.
Ngatia added that family problems, stress from heavy workloads and the everyday tension of being in high risk surroundings always torture the officers psychologically and result to these cases.
“Policemen are trained to see enemies in everyone. They just can’t talk to anyone about their problems. They can’t talk to those around them, neither can they talk to those with them because they have the same problems,” she said.
This emerges a week after another policewoman killed herself at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport when she locked herself in the washroom and shot herself.
