Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Willy Bett has assured Kenyans that there is enough food to feed everyone up to the end of May next year.
Bett said the current national stock as at September 30 stood at 7,672,015 bags of maize.
The Cabinet Secretary revealed that millers and traders were holding about one million bags, and the National Cereals and Produce Board having another one million bags.
“This is subject to the performance of the short-rain season, which the Kenya Meteorological Department has said will be above normal,” he said, as quoted by The Star.
He added, “The expected harvest from the North Rift between October and December is projected to yield 14 million bags. The current stocks and projected harvest will, therefore, be sufficient to meet national demands to the end of the year. From the maize balance sheet, a surplus of 10.3 million bags will be carried over to 2018.”
The CS was speaking when he released the current national food security situation at Kilimo House, Nairobi.
