The selected students will be joining both public and private universities under the government-sponsored programme.

Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed said that 36,945 of those selected are male while 25,946 are female.

"I therefore urge the placement service to reach out to these candidates individually, so that they are given chances for them to apply," said the CS.

As it was noted by the CS, the number of last year candidates selected to pursue courses in Science Technology and Mathematics (STEM) has increased by 20 percent as compared to the previous year.

The CS linked the rise to government's drive to encourage more students to pursue courses in (STEM) so that the country can achieve Vision 2030 goals

She said 44.76 percent of the candidates, which is about 28, 135 students, have been admitted to science courses while 56.24 percent which translates to 34,716 students, will study humanities

Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has said other 553 students from the last year's KCSE opted for diploma courses even after scoring grade C+ and above, 5,747 students failed to secure placement while 2,128 students did not apply at all.
