Devolution Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri has vowed to campaign for President Uhuru Kenyatta's re-election ahead of the August polls.
Speaking at Giakanja market in Tetu on Sunday, Kiunjuri noted that the Jubilee administration had delivered on key pledges made by President Kenyatta in the run up to the 2013 general elections.
Kiunjuri's defiance comes just days after the Opposition alliance NASA led by Raila Odinga said the coalition would sack all senior government officials engaging in active politics should the Opposition unseat President Kenyatta during the August polls.
State House and electoral agency IEBC have since defended Cabinet Secretaries engaging in political campaigns, saying ministers are exempted from the law barring civil servants from campaigning.
“Cabinet secretaries are exempted from the law (barring civil servants from campaigning). They can propagate party activities,” IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati said in a press briefing last week.
“But the rest of the civil servants are bound by the law and if reports (of their campaigning) come to us, we will act. Our enforcement team is ready and will take action,” he added.
