Education Cabinet secretary Fred Matiang'i has asked school leavers who did not attain university entry grades to join village polytechnics to acquire skills to better their living standards.
Matiang'i said despite the government pumping a lot of money into polytechnics, very few youths have enrolled to the institutions, especially those in Nyamira County.
"For instance, the Ekerubo Gietai Polytechnic which the President commissioned recently has a capacity of 1,300 students but only 600 have enrolled. Why the low enrollment and yet there are many school leavers around?" asked Matiangi.
The minister added that the government has doubled the allocation to polytechnics from Sh300 million to Sh600 million each financial year in its effort to ensure the infrastructure, equipment and materials of study are available for students.
