Last year, Education Cabinet Secretary and acting Interior CS Fred Matiang’i was a hero to every Kenyan who loves quality education. However, the gracious Mating’i has disappointed a section of Kenyans including me.

From the political sentiments that were seen as a move to blindly back his employer, Jubilee, to re-emergence of cheating in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations, Matiang’i has betrayed his legacy.

The cheats that were satisfactorily dealt with last year have outshined Mating’i. They are using mobile phones to transmit leaked papers to candidates. St Theresa Girls Senior School in Nakuru County was deregistered by Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang’.

Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) Chairman George Magoha released a statement on Sunday owned up that there were teachers and principals who were colluding with cartels to leak KCSE text papers. Such cases have been reported in Trans Nzoia, Elgeyo Marakwet and Siaya County.

Magoha also said that a male student in Wajir County was suspected to be sending leaked exam to a friend in Nairobi County. In the same capital, a female candidate at school located in Shauri Moyo was found with a mobile phone.

Despite the attempt by the ministry to prosecute the culprits, something seems to have changed between last year and now. Is that the interior security docket is important than the education slot or is the CS busy politicking?
