The ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development through the National Buildings Inspectorate has ordered an inspection and audit all buildings in Ruiru and Ruaka.
This comes after residents were on Thursday, last week evacuated from a five-storey building in Ruaka, after it started showing signs of sinking.
In a statement to newsrooms on Monday, Cabinet Secretary James Macharia said Ruiru and Ruaka in Kiambu County have shown signs of many buildings that are suspected to be unsafe.
“In order to reassure the public and ensure safety of these occupants, I have directed the National Buildings Inspectorate to lead other government agencies and the Kiambu County Government to inspect and audit all buildings in Ruiru and Ruaka as a matter of urgency,” read the statement in part.
He said the exercise will cover both buildings under construction and those that are already occupied.
Macharia said developers and owners will be required to avail their consultants on inspection day, to meet with the inspection teams on site so as to take professional responsibility.
He asked tenants to seek copies of occupation certificates from landlords as confirmation that thire facilities are certified by County Authorities for occupation.
The CS further cautioned residents against occupying buildings that have been marked for further investigation or closure.
