Speaking in Naivasha during the commissioning of a Sh5 billion Keroche Breweries plant, Mohammed said that more than 80 local brewers who have been unable to meet the requirement have been forced to close down.

“We have asked every brewer to have an in-house laboratory with qualified staff to ensure that the quality of alcohol going to the market is safe,” said Aden.

The CS added that they have made it a requirement for all the methanol coming into the country to be pre-inspected as well as to be denatured to make it suitable for human consumption.

"This idea was informed by the fact that methanol has become almost a national disaster in this country,” he said.

Aden also announced that he has instructed KEBS to come up with insignias specific to every brewer that enables them to be traced quickly.

He however maintained that the battle against illicit brews can only be won if there is goodwill of all stakeholders in the brewing industry.
