Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia has reshuffled 14 senior officials working at the Port of Mombasa to improve work efficiency at the facility.
Mr Macharia said the move to reshuffle the senior managers is aimed at addressing performance and governance issues.Speaking on Thursday at Prideinn Hotel in Mombasa, Mr Macharia assured the managers that no one will lose their job as the government seeks to ensure the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) succeeds. The shuffle caught the port workers and the senior officials unawares as the CS said the changes will take effect immediately.“We have redeployed heads of departments to different sections. This is due to the 14 senior general managers’ performance and governance that have impacted on the overall performance of the port,” said Macharia.“Nobody will lose their job as at the moment. In addition to performance, stakeholders highlighted lapses in governance issues,” added Macharia as quoted by the Nation. The CS further said that Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and the Kenya Railways directors should ensure that all cargo is being transported via the SGR freight services.“It will benefit everybody because the train takes six hours, unlike the trucks which take two days. It will also stop accidents in terms of damage to our roads,” he added.
