Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Willy Bett has urged farmers to diversify and stop depending only on maize and wheat.

He said they should try crops such as potatoes and rice which take a shorter period to mature and have more income than the two crops.

“We want farmers from the region to stop the norm of only depending on maize and wheat, by diversifying Kenya will be food secure,” he said in Eldoret town, Monday.

“I want to also urge farmers to practice mechanization and agribusiness since it is the only way that will guarantee them high-quality yields thus increased income and creation of job opportunities.

He, however, urged farmers to ensure they join cooperatives for them to benefit from both the county and national governments funds and facilities.

“When they belong to a particular cooperative society they will have a high bargaining power when buying farm inputs and also when selling their produce,” noted Bett.
