Education Cabinet secretary Amina Mohammed has warned schools in the country against charging extra levies to parents.

The CS who was speaking at St Patrick s Iten on Friday in Elgeyo Marakwet county said that no school was allowed to charge any extra money to parents other that the amounts prescribed by the ministry of Education.

“If there is any school with such cases then we need that information so that the law can take its own course. All we want is quality and relevant education,” she said.

The government had reviewed annual subsidy for each pupil for the year 2018 from Sh12,870 to Sh22,244 to ensure free day secondary school.

Parents with  children at national and extra county schools are required to pay fees of uptown a maximum of sh 53554.

Form one admissions during the beginning of the term saw schools charge extra amount s claiming being payment of Insurance (medical and property) and also medical fees. Some schools had also asked students to report with a team of photocopying papers .

Former Education CS Dr Fred Matiang'i had directed the parents to buy extra books since the government had committed to distribute the text books. A move that CS Amina Mohammed has added a voice on.
