Commission for University Education (CUE) has published a list of accredited universities in the country.
According to the list, Kenya has 31 public universities, six constituent colleges, and 18 private universities.
“Members of the public are hereby notified that any institution purported to offer university education in Kenya and does not appear in this list is not authorized to operate,” CUE said in an advertisement published in the local dailies yesterday.
Kenyans have since been urged to report any suspicious institutions to the commission, even as it assured all information received will be handled in strict confidence. Similarly, CUE said recognition of degree qualifications offered by foreign universities should be sought from the commission.
Just last month, Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i ordered that opening of satellite campuses be halted across the country with immediate effect, saying the ministry has since closed down campuses set up outside the country by two public universities.
The list of public universities includes the University of Nairobi, Moi, Kenyatta, Egerton, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Maseno, Masinde Muliro, Dedan Kimathi, Chuka, Technical University of Kenya, Technical University of Mombasa and Pwani.
