Commission for University Education (CUE) chairman Chacha Nyaigoti Chacha has criticized universities over poor accommodation despite the increasing number of students being admitted for different courses.Chacha, who spoke in Nairobi during a conference on the state of education organised by the Africa-America Institute, said it is perturbing to notice that most universities across the nation have continued to increase their yearly intake yet they do not have accommodation for the students. The educationist also said the high enrollment at the institutions has made learning a nightmare.“In the past, students used to enjoy their stay in universities but today students cannot invite their parents and friends to visit them since the environment they are living in is poor,” said Chacha. He also argued that it does not make sense to continue praising the increasing number of universities and intake in the institutions when the graduates are not meeting the needs of the job market.“There is new madness around the globe, and we cannot continue glorifying the number of universities without being worried about quality education,” he added. He further called upon the government and other stakeholders to ensure that the quality of accommodation is improved at the university for the sake of the education sector.
