Kikuyu MCA Binary Wainaina said that KENHA has delayed construction of a drainage system despite notices to county government officials.

“Business people at Dagorretti slaughter houses and Kiawamagira village will have peaceful demonstrations along the Southern bypass if nothing is done concerning the matter,” Wainaina said.

Dagorretti Market is one of the largest retail markets known for meat supply both in Kiambu and Nairobi. It is of the most affected by the heavy downpour in the last two weeks.

According to Nyongara Slaughterhouse manager Kennedy Ababu, KENHA engineers have neglected their duties by failing to include drainage systems during the construction of Southern bypass.

“Many slaughterhouses have been closed as a result and the premises owners have incurred losses due to the menace. Nyongara Slaughterhouse perimeter wall has been damaged thrice by heavy flooding,” he said.

Ababu said that the hygienic condition of the slaughterhouses has been affected and extra cleaning has to be done hourly. He added that the roads in the area are impassable which has affected the usual activities of the slaughterhouses.

Mary Wairimu whose house was swept away by uncontrolled floods said KENHA should provide details of the  drainage system designed by the county government.

Speaking on behalf of Kiawamagira farmers and Dagorretti businessmen, Wainaina asked KENHA to compensate all the affected parties for the incurred losses and to urgently construct proper drainage systems in the affected areas.
