Daraja Mbili market is slated to have a new face in four months’ time as the Kisii County Government works closely with stakeholders to see the dream come true.

According to Kisii County government Minister for Trade and Industry Samuel Kebati, the county has received money from the National Government for the project and they have identified consultants to conduct mapping and assessment before the project kicks off.

“We have received Sh600 million from the National government for the upgrading of Daraja Mbili market. Consultants are already conducting mapping and impact assessment is too taking place soon.

He disclosed that the project shall kick off by April 2015 adding that they are also working closely with other stakeholders like Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) to see that the market acquires a new face,” said Kebati.

The Executive added that they will build a four-storey building that will accommodate all kinds of businesses in the region that will also help the government collect levies.

“We will build a four-storey building so that all business people in the market will have a better place to sell their goods. This will also enhance levy collection,” said Kebati.

As one way of decongesting Daraja Mbili market, the Minister said they will also erect a fly-over for pedestrians so that the road can majorly be a preserve for vehicles.

Kebati also noted other achievements the county government has made in the trade sector like lighting up towns and urban centers, improving sewerage system and garbage collection.

“The county government has achieved a lot of its promises in the sector to mention a view; enhancing security for night traders through solar street lighting that aims at making Kisii County a 24 hour economy, our sewerage system is now better and our town is smarter as compared to the past,” said Kebati adding that they have also identified a dumpsite where garbage will be collected as one way of making the town beautiful and admirable people.
