Justice David Maraga was on Monday announced the winner of the 2017 Jurist of the Year Award (JOYA).
Justice Maraga was honored for his dedication for upholding democracy, justice and rule of law in the country.
The International Commission of Jurist (ICJ) chairman Kelvin Mogeni who hosted the event termed Maraga as independent minded and hardworking judge who performed his work with diligence and determination.
“The jurist of the year is none other than the Chief Justice of the republic of Kenya and the president of the Supreme Court, Justice David Kenani Maraga, ”said Mogeni.
Justice Maraga nullified President Kenyatta election of August 8th saying it was not in accordance with the law.
The award celebration occurred on Monday evening due to late delivering of Supreme Court full judgment on approval of President Kenyatta October election.
The commission noted that there was several attacks on civil society groups and human rights defenders in 2017 for the work that they did to assure the rights of every person were respected an issue that Mogeni wanted addressed in the coming days.
World Human Rights Day was celebrated on Monday.
