Day Schools charging school fees have been told to refund the money paid or else face dire consequence from the national government.

Speaking during at a ward development forum in Meru town, County Commissioner Wilfred Nyagwanga said that President Uhuru Kenyatta was very clear that day schools should not charge any fees and those that have done so should return the money to parents immediately.

Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi said that teachers should find others way of looking for funds, not through school fees.

The governor said they will be on the lookout of those charging fees and if found, stern action will be taken against them.

Meru Deputy Governor Titus Ntuchiu urged the county commissioner to work closely with the county government to ensure that students are not sent away from school because of school fees or textbooks.

The national government this year launched free day secondary school education.

The students are also given free textbooks for all subjects.
