Daystar University has finally sacked Vice-Chancellor Prof. Timothy Wachira. Prof Wachira's removal has been pegged on mismanagement of school resources and poor leadership.
These grounds correlate with the previous narrative of students at the institution who demanded that he be removed. During his reign, students' unrest had been normative.
In December alone, the institution was shut twice over students' unrest, a scenario that recurred in April this year.
Professor James Kombo, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for AcademicAffairs now takes over as the acting Vice-Chancellor until an official replacement is made.
“This is to inform the University Community that the University Council has terminated the services of Prof Timothy Wachira as Vice-chancellor of Daystar University. Prof Wachira is in the process of handing over and clearing from the University,” Daystar University is quoted by Citizen TV.
On Monday, December 18 last year Prof Timothy Wachira was sent on a compulsory leave to allow investigations into his conduct take place.
“Council directed an independent investigation to be conducted on the allegations raised by the student government and a report to be handed in not later than February 15, 2018,” an email memo sent to students by the Council Chair Prof George Krhoda stated in part.
Three unions; Daystar University Students Association, Senior Staff Association of Daystar University and Daystar University General Staff Association, have all written to the university council to demand a comprehensive audit of the university's finances.
Reportedly, three other senior staff are to step aside in the next few days as part of the implementation of an audit report.
Prof Timothy Wachira holds a doctoral degree in Public Health from the University of Nairobi. He served as the Vice Chancellor St Paul’s University in 2004 to 2010. Previously, he served as a General Secretary Fellowship of Christian Unions (FOCUS), Senior Medical Research Scientist, African Medical Research Foundation (AMREF), Lecturer University Nairobi and a Senior Research Scientist Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI).
