Thika West Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Jeremiah Gicheru has warned chiefs in the sub-county to be vigilant and to work with Community Policing officials to tame insecurity in the area.
Gicheru who was speaking to the press on Wednesday claimed that area chiefs have been reluctant and doing shoddy jobs paving way for brewing illicit liquor and distribution of drugs and substance abuse to youths.
The DCC expressed his concerns about the increased number of illegal alcohol dens in the area which still was on rampant even after distributing motorbikes to security officers in more than five wards to help them tame and flash out the perpetrators.
“Even after distributing motorbikes to different wards I am still getting the same reports of illicit dens in the area,” said Gicheru warning them that he could reconsider withdrawing the motorbikes from the area since according to him, the bikes were not being used for their intended purposes.
He alleged that the chiefs are reluctant and some of them promote the selling of the illicit liquor by buying and drinking from the same dens.
He urged the chiefs to appoint elders in the community who will be working hand in hand with them to report various incidents that residents might fear reporting to the authority.
“I want chiefs to try and mobilise the residents to appoint elders in each region to help fight crime and illegal substance in our region,” said the DCC.
The DCC however hailed community policing Chairman Paul Njomo whom he acknowledged that has been having an impact in mobilising his team in taming insecurity in the region.
He also extended his gratitude to the County Governor William Kabogo for his tremendous support in taming insecurity in Kiambu County.
Gicheru added that plans to distribute Land Rovers to “Mashinani” authorities to boost and beef up security in the sub counties are underway.
