A veterinary officer in Rongai Constituency, Nakuru County, has expressed concern over the alarming spread of foot-and-mouth disease in the area.

According to Martin Kihara, the deadly disease has killed more than 30 cows after spreading fast in the region's four wards.

"The disease has spread to Mosop, Visoi, Soin and Menengai West. Many more animals are at a risk," he said.

Ten cases of dead animals were first reported on Sunday.

Dr Kihara said the disease, which spreads fast among cows, could cause more harm if immediate action was not taken.

"The relevant government authorities need to take a swift action and contain the killer disease and ensure more farmers do not incur losses due to death of their cows," Kihara added on Tuesday.
