The death toll from the Sunday night accident along the Thika-Garissa Highway continues to rise.

The deaths have hit 18 people, who lost their lives after an accident involving a matatu and a lorry at Ngoliba on the highway.

One passenger who was in the matatu died on Monday, adding to the 11 who died on the spot on a fateful night.

Six others, among them the driver of the lorry, died in hospital on Sunday, in what was another nightmare moment on our roads.

The accident occurred when the driver of the matatu that was heading to Kitui from Nairobi tried to overtake a motorcycle, ending up colliding with the lorry head-on.

This lead to the above deaths, with 10 men, six women and two children, a boy and a girl aged six and two respectively the victims.

There is hope for three victims who are still recuperating at the Thika Level Five Hospital, with two sustaining head injuries and multiple limb fractures.

“The one in the ICU is still critical but the rest who were admitted to our hospital are well,” Dr Joseph Wanjohi, who spoke to the Nation on Monday, said.

The accident once again painted a grim picture of the situation on our roads, which have taken lives of more than 150 people in the last two weeks.

The National Transport and Safety Authority has said it will launch a serious crackdown to apprehend all those breaking traffic rules.
