At least five people are feared dead although police have given a conflicting figure of three people in a grisly road accident that occurred last evening near Matuu town on the Thika/Garissa road when a 39 seater matatu plying from Mwingi to Nairobi lost control and overturned rolling several times.

Some of those dead were crashed beyond recognition while others lost hands and legs.

Yatta OCPD Mr. Edward Changachi, indicated those dead as three, with four others critically injured and thirty-four sustaining slight injuries.

However, when the Media arrived at the scene of the accident five minutes after the bus overturned at about 6.35pm yesterday evening, three bodies were lying on the road and two others retrieved from the bus at around 9 pm when the rescue mission ended in darkness.

The accident scene immediately turned a war zone when angry members of the public attacked NTSA officials with kicks and punches and even some of the traffic officers accusing them of compromise by the matatu crew to allow them to break traffic rules.

The rowdy residents claimed that few minutes before the accident the officers stopped the bus one kilometer away and took bribe before allowing it to proceed with journey even when it had excess passengers.

Similar sentiments were echoed by survivors of the accident who confirmed having seen the bus crew give money to the officers before them and let the bus to go.

The injured were taken to different hospitals with the dead taken to the Matuu level four mortuary.
