The 2018 Kenya Premier League (KPL) season kicked off with surprises as debutants Wazito FC beat 2005 champions Sony Sugar 1-0.
The match was played at Nairobi’s camp Toyoyo Stadium, with Sony Sugar keeper Kevin Omondi’s blunder gifting Wazito FC the lone goal in the 30th minute.
“We record our first game, maximum points with a solitary goal in the first half. We take the positive start to the Kenya Premier League in stride,” read a message on the Club’s official face book page - Wazito Football Club after the Sony match.
Wazito led by former Gor Mahia assistant coach Frank Ouna got KPL promotion at the end of last season, after finishing second in the second tier league – National Super League (NSL) behind Champions Vihiga United.
Champions’ Gor Mahia showed an early indication of retaining the KPL crown after thrashing Nakumatt FC 4-0 at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos, while Chemelil Sugar saw off a new look Tusker FC 2-0 at the Chemelil Sports Complex.
Ulinzi Stars defeated Zoo Kericho 4-02 at the Afraha Stadium in Nakuru, while Kariobangi Sharks escaped with a 1 nil win over Nzoia Sugar FC at the Sudi Stadium.
Vihiga United will make their KPL debut against 2008 Champions Mathare United at the Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega on Sunday. Other matches will feature Sofapaka against Bandari FC and Thika United versus Kakamega Homeboyz.
