Uasin Gishu county residents will have to wait longer to know if they will be given free carrier bags by supermarkets operating in the region.

The county MCAs last month passed a motion making it compulsory for the retailers to provide customers with free bags to carry their goods after the government banned the use of plastic carrier bags.

Assembly majority leader Josphat Lowol said the retailers were putting the lives of residents at risk with mixing items which should not be mixed in one bag.

Lowoi said the motion was submitted to the executive before the MCAs went for recess.

"The motion is before the executive and we are waiting for them to act on it from January 2018," said the MCA.

He said the assembly won't change mind and drop the motion.

"Retailers who will fail to adhere to the new law will look for an alternative location to operate but not within the county," he stated.
