Aspiring Starehe MP and rights activist Boniface Mwangi has challenged politicians seeking elective posts in the August elections to declare publicly their position on whether or not they will take a pay-cut if elected.

Mwangi has said he will vouch for salary cuts on civil servants and political leaders when elected MP and has promised to start with himself as an example.

This, he says, is to reduce the burden on the economy due to a huge wage bill.

"All aspirants should tell Kenyans if they are willing and ready to take a pay cut once elected and privileges as bodyguards are not necessary as they have burdened wananchi," he said.

This comes after a revelation from the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) which showed that a whooping Sh20 billion is pocketed by less than two percent of civil servants every year as wages.

Mwangi argued that more than 50 billion can be saved every year should MPs' salaries be reduced by half.
