Kiambu county assembly Speaker Gathii Irungu has downplayed the defection of seven Kiambu MCAs from Jubilee Party to ODM terming it as 'insignificant'.

Irungu has said that Kiambu remains a Jubilee stronghold and the defections will have no impact whatsoever to the Jubilee Party on August 8 polls.

"The assembly is made up of 88 members and only eight defected to ODM, although they are yet to make it official. Once they do, I will take the necessary actions as per the law to ensure that they cease to be members of this assembly," said Irungu on Monday.

Nasa leader Raila Odinga on Monday received the seven MCAs with other six defectors.

The seven MCAs are drawn from Thika, Juja, Kiambu and Limuru and include among others Hospital Ward MCA Mwangi wa Mwangi, George Gitau (Juja) and Mary Muigai who is running for Limuru Central Ward on an ODM ticket as indicated by Michael Rubia who is NASA’s coordinator in Central Kenya.

The MCAs said they were disgruntled by the Jubilee Party after it sidelined them despite being ardent followers of the party.
