Cases of defilement in Kisumu County have been reported to be on the rise and parents are urged to protect their children more. Coalition on Violence Against Women programme associate, Felisia Mburu, said children are an easy target for defilement cases in the county. “Our children are at a higher risk and especially those who are physically challenged,” she said. She noted that parents are to blame for defilement cases in the county as they have abdicated their roles of protecting their children. “Parents have abandoned their duty to ensure their children are safe. During holidays, some parents are not even aware where their children are,” she said. Speaking in Kisumu during the launch of a gender based violence assessment report in the wake of celebrations to mark 16 days of gender based violence activism, Mburu said conviction of defilement cases has been a hindrance. She said more supporting evidence is required in a defilement case and in most occasions such evidence is lacking. She said the coalition is creating awareness in the county to ensure the worrying defilement trends are reversed.
