Kenyan PMs will not be required to have university degrees as a requirement for election, Parliament has said.
According to the Nation, there has been an intense lobbying from both Houses to exempt MPs from the degree requirement.
Leader of Majority Aden Duale will soon be recalling the Bill that has already caused panic in a number of the politicians, some of whom are serving third terms without attending a post-secondary school institution.
“I have notified the speaker of my intention for a recommittal of amendments. I therefore want to assure all those affected that there should be no cause for alarm,” said Duale on Saturday.
However, the opposition has accused the government side over claims of acting unilaterally concerning the bill.
“We have not sat down with Mr Duale to agree on how to go about this Bill,” said Cord chief whip Thomas Mwadeghu.
Mwadeghu has said that minimum academic qualifications for lawmakers is a welcome idea as it would enable MPs to have a grasp of complex ideas.
“As the country develops, it would be good to have MPs who are more conversant with complex issues, who have a wide scope of world affairs. I don’t know any other way of achieving this but the intention is not to cast aspersion on anybody,” he said.
The said Bill was passed on December 1st but a second-thought from the MPs has led to the recalling for amendments.
