With only recently promoted Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital acting as the only public hospital in the region, the hospital is congested due to high demand of medical services.

This has poised a major threat in town given many underprivileged Kenyans cannot afford charges imposed to them in private hospitals.

According to some of the residents and visitors, the major delay observed in the hospital has inconvenienced many of them compelling them to seek alternatives and private hospitals which are plenty in town.

“The queue down there is long and some people need urgent care. Many of us have resorted to private facilities though they are  a bit expensive,” said Evans Monari, a patient at RAM hospital.

Jane Makori, a patient at Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital narrates the ordeal she went through before being admitted due to many people waiting for the same service from a few doctors.

“It took my family three days to find for me a space here. It was a major challenge and the hospital is receiving many patients,” said Makori.

However, Dr. J.S. Onyango who owns a private clinic said the menace is threatening the health sector and something urgent ought to be done so that poor Kenyans enjoy medical services.

“It is true that Kisii Level six is serving patients from about four counties in South Nyanza and this is quite dangerous. We have even resorted to reducing our charges due to increased number of people coming to private hospitals,” said Dr. Onyango.
