Demonstrations in Kisumu have here forth been banned ahead of next week’s elections by Kisumu law enforcement.
According to County commissioner Maalim Mohamed, this rule has been implemented as a safeguard against the destruction of property.
This is after the post-election violence experienced in 2007-2008.
"Peaceful protests within the county are always hijacked by goons whose motive is to destroy property," Mohammed said as reported by The Star.
He added that they are aware of people planning to repeat what happened in 2007-2008
"Since this is the mentality, we will not condone demonstrations. Those who want to do so must request police presence as the law states," the boss stated.
Mohamed asked local candidates not to discuss the issue citing that it is a matter of security for residents.
Kisumu was a victim of PEV in 2007-2008. Hotspots include Kondele, Nyalenda, Nyamasaria, Manyatta, Obunga, Kibuye market, Bus Park and the CBD.
"We will ensure all residents are safe. Kisumu cannot be destroyed every five years because of elections," Mohammed said.
