Siaya Governor Cornell Rasanga has said Thursday's anti-IEBC demos will be peaceful, and the county will provide demonstrators with white handkerchiefs to symbolise peace.
“We will not wish that what happened last time happens again and for that reason I have talked with the county commissioner and pledged that the anti-IEBC demos will be peaceful,” Rasanga told journalists.
Two people were shot dead in Siaya in the demos on May 23, as one suffered the same fate in Kisumu.
“We intend to demonstrate according to the provisions of the Constitution and all we ask from the police is provision of security,” said Rasanga.
The nationwide demos are intended to establish a national dialogue between the government and the opposition on the best way to solve the IEBC impasse.
Inspector General of police Joseph Boinnet said on Sunday demonstrators have a right, just like any other Kenyan, to picket peacefully as it is provided for by the law.
He said the planned demos are allowed and police will provide security for the same. He however, urged the organisers to provide the police with the route, time and intended destination to help them plan accordingly.
Boinnet said police need to have organisers of the events take charge of their procession as the officers to be seconded there would be leading the way.
