A deputy governor is among people arrested and detained by police in Nairobi for drunk driving.

Kakamega Deputy Governor Philip Kutima was arrested in an operation jointly conducted by traffic police and officials from National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

By the time this writer spoke to a police officer from Ruiru police station, Mr Museve and 42 others arrested on Friday night were still detained at the station.

NTSA has of recent stepped efforts to rid roads off drunk drivers.

The body has closely been working with traffic police officers along Nairobi's main roads to nab drunk drivers.

According to data from NTSA, in 2015 alone, 1,344 pedestrians were killed after being knocked down by speeding vehicles.

NTSA linked over-speeding along the country's key roads to drunkenness.

The same data indicated that 339 drivers, 668 passengers and 637 motorcyclists perished while on the road.
