There is need for collaborative measures in order to completely eradicate cultural practices that undermine some members of the society especially women, Uasin Gishu county Deputy Governor Daniel Chemno has suggested.
Addressing gender activists at Eldoret town after an anti- Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) campaign on Thursday, the deputy governor said that there must be collaboration between the government, stakeholders and professional.
The deputy governor said that practices like FGM, forced marriage and Gender Violence should be condemned and not allowed in the society.
“FGM other decretory practices like forced marriages cannot be fought by the government alone, we must join hands,” he said.
Mr Chemno said that Uasin Gishu is among the county that some cultures still allow practices that demean and undermine women.
He said that FGM is a cultural practice that should be denounced by the communities still practicing it.
The Deputy Governor asked for more awareness campaigns to make the communities denounce the practice.
Chemno noted that girls have the right to education and good life saying that FGM has thwarted the dreams of many girls especially in the North Rift.
The Deputy Governor said that the government must implement proper laws to fight FGM and Gender Based Violence.
He indicated that at least 30 cases of Gender Based Violence (GBV) are reported across the county daily.
Chemno urged the county assembly to spearhead laws that will protect women rights and welfare.
