Failure to release funds to counties on time is the biggest challenge facing the construction sector in the country, Uasin Gishu deputy governor Daniel Chemno has revealed.
According to Chemno, delays in the funds had led to staling of key county construction projects. He further said this risks compromising the quality of the projects.
Speaking in Eldoret town on Monday, Chemno asked the national government to work towards ensuring delayed funds are released as soon as possible and also ensure there are no further delays in future.
The Jubilee deputy governor also expressed concerns that contractors were having a hard time paying their suppliers with some on the verge of facing litigations.
“We are now facing a slow economic growth because of the delayed funds to counties because, through payments to contractors, suppliers will get their money and Kenyans working in the sector will get their income but at now we are stuck,” said Chemno.
“Many contractors are complaining and we urge that the money is released as quick as possible,” he added.
Chemno, however, reaffirmed that the county government of Uasin Gishu was committed to ensuring all constructions in the county meet the set standards.
He also warned county officials against approving construction of building being done by contractors with questionable credentials.
