According to Governor Ruto, Mutai has abandoned duty since 2015 and now he has threatened to take away his vehicle, staff , and other privileges if he does not report back on duty within 3 days.

"I have not seen him working with us for the last one year. He must return to work within the shortest time possible," Ruto said.

"He has neglected his duties and is now going around gossiping. I doubt if he has acquainted himself with what he is supposed to do as my deputy. I am the one who should assign him duties yet he has not reported to work for more than a year," he added.

On his side, Mutai complained of being undermined in performing his duty after being denied funds for the past two years.

However, many see the strained relationship as a move by Governor Ruto to silence his deputy after he declared his ambition to run for the gubernatorial race in 2017 early in May.

“I have been a deputy for the last three years. During this time, I have gained enough muscle to wrestle the seat from my boss,” Mutai stated.
