The national government has been put on the spot over the stalled construction of the Eldoret-based Kipchoge Keino stadium.
Uasin Gishu deputy governor Daniel Chemno expressed concerns over slow-pace of construction works at the stadium that was among the five earmarked to host the CHAN 2018.
Kenya was stripped of the hosting rights following its failure to beat key datelines in the completion of the stadiums.
Since the rights were awarded to Morocco, construction works had stalled due to lack of funds to contractors on site.
“We want to ask the government to hasten the release of funds to facilitate completion of construction works at the Kipchoge Keino stadium,” said Chemno on Sunday after the inaugural Eldoret City Marathon.
“Our athletes are having a hard time finding an ideal place to train as they depended on this stadium and this is why we need constructions works to be complete as soon as possible,” he added.
Once complete, Kipchoge Keino stadium will have been upgraded to the international stadium standards.
Among key areas being worked on include building the terraces, two pavilions, and entry and exits gates, changing rooms and an indoor games hall as well as replacing the football pitch with the artificial grass.
