Speaking at the launch of the African Year of Human Rights in Kenya organised by Plan International in partnership with the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), the deputy governor called on the leaders to voice out the challenges that have promoted the vulnerability of women and children in the county.

“I am challenging the women in political leadership from this county to protect the rights of women and children. It is that time that the county realises the influence of women in addressing women rights,” said Ms Odinga.

She noted the high rates of human rights abuses against women and children in the county yet there are no enough safe shelters to cater for the vulnerable groups.

She said the government must work with speed to address the cultural barriers that perpetuate violence against women.

“Women in this country have for a long time been left behind when it comes to decision making even at the community level leaving men at the helm of power hence denying them a chance to participate in development. This is a culture that must stop, “she said.

Ms Odinga lauded Kisumu County for putting women at the for front in the running of the county but said it is time that the county domesticated laws that will address human rights abuses met on the vulnerable groups who are majorly women and children.

“Making laws is not enough; the government must ensure that they are effectively implemented more so now that we are approaching the general election, “said Ms Odinga

She challenged women leaders in Kisumu County to prioritise on the protection of the rights of the vulnerable groups who are majorly women and children.

“It is never enough for a girl to have only high school level of education, let us support our girls to rise higher. In this, we create a generation of smart women who are able to serve the country in different capacities, “she said
