The day was February, 5, 1994 and though there was no 21 gun salute, the Kenyan flag flew at half mast, proof that the nation had lost a very important man.

The event happened at Kang'o Ka Jaramogi and brought together both friends and foes, with almost a quarter of a million people gathering to see him off.

In attendance were influential government and political figures, including the then President Daniel Moi, Democratic Party leader and later President Mwai Kibaki, Uhuru Kenyatta and the later to be Vice President Kijana Wamalwa.

Jaramogi's casket was imported from the United Kingdom and was reportedly made of a 145-year old tree and the body was escorted by a convoy of around 300 cars.

Mourners escorted the body for 33 kilometres from Awasi to Nyamira Kang'o, a funeral that saw 100 bulls slaughtered.

Speeches were given, poems and songs were also there, with religious leaders and their political counterparts also eulogizing the fallen hero.

He was laid to rest 10 metres from his own home at exactly 3:00pm with the only remaining thing now being his memories and the great job he did for the nation.
