The two principals were under pressure from the US, religious community and European Union to strike a deal that would lead to ceasefire.

But according to multiple sources, NASA's proposal for electoral justice in the agenda made the president uncomfortable with the discussions ahead of planned meeting in December.

To Uhuru, insiders say, the electoral justice could have led to an election in 2018 or 2019 which we would not entertain.

Further, Uhuru was under pressure from Deputy President William Ruto, who is also said to have been uncomfortable with the talks on grounds that they would sabotage his 2022 chances.

Reports further indicates that the two nearly met in December through the aide of envoys but unfortunately, they are said to have been out of Nairobi concurrently.

NASA is understandably pushing for a referendum with rotational presidency and introduction of Prime Minister position being on top of the agenda.
