Njoro Ward MCA Ezekiel Kungu has suggested that Parliament should amend the constitution to allow for the devolution of education services to counties to solve teachers’ problems once and for all.
Addressing traders and members of the public on Wednesday when he unveiled a new water project at Njoro Wakulima Market Kungu argued that devolving education system and services to county levels will help solve many problems affiliated to the education system.
He claimed that the current salary increment demand strike by teachers is one of the issues a devolved education system can solve. The MCA said that county governments could deal with teachers as individual governments and solve their problems locally unlike the central government that was finding it difficult to deal with teachers country wide.
“Some of the problems facing the education sector like the teachers strikes can be dealt with easily if education system and services are devolved. Parliament should think of amending the constitution to allow for devolution of education in the country,” said Kungu.
The MCA observed that the strike by teachers was affecting parents, teachers, and children psychologically and appealed to the government and teachers’ unions to find a quick solution.
This call comes just a few days after majority leader in the National Assembly Aden Duale also suggested the same, arguing that devolving education system to county levels would save parents, students and the country from teachers’ strikes which has been the norm for a long period.
