Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi has accused the national government of using the Galana-Kulalu irrigation project as a cash cow.
Kingi said the Jubilee administration has spent billions on the scheme and yet the returns are dismal, the Star has reported.“If there was a good idea the Jubilee government had, it was the Galana-Kulalu irrigation project. That project, if well undertaken, would surely make Kenya food secure. It is, however, sad to note that the Jubilee government had other motives other than making the country food secure. The money used does not translate into the maize produced,” Kingi noted. The county boss said if he is re-elected come August 8, he'll push to have his county reclaim the Galana side of the expansive project. He also promised to rally his Tana River County counterpart to lobby for the devolution of the project. This, said Kingi, will boost the county's food security. He accused the central government of pumping Sh7 billion into the project, yet the output was only 60,000 bags.“Do your calculations to know how much each bag of maize appears to have cost. We must take this project as a county and this I will do once I am re-elected," he said.He also dismissed remarks by President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto during their tour of the region in March where they claimed he was responsible for the hunger situation in the county.
