Kangundo level four medical superintendent Dr Supa Tunje has advised patients with hypertension and diabetes not to seek herbal and other traditional remedies as they risk developing kidney diseases.

Dr Tunje said using herbal concoctions could worsen their conditions making their kidneys lose the ability to remove waste and maintain fluid and chemical balances in the body.

Speaking on Tuesday in her office she noted that keeping blood sugar levels and blood pressure under control through proper medication and maintaining a healthy lifestyle may help prevent or delay kidney disease from progressing to kidney failure.

“Most of these herbal preparations are not safe to use as they may cause allergies, infections and even death. They are not purified, are prepared in an unhygienic manner and there is no proper dosage administered,” noted Dr Tunje.

The medic noted that mismanaged or uncontrolled hypertension and diabetes will lead to kidney failure which will more often require dialysis.

He advised patients ailing from the two diseases to undergo regular check- ups twice a year so as to monitor their blood sugar levels and blood pressure so as to avert developing kidney disease.
