There have been allegations that the Nakuru County government used Mungiki sect to evict hawkers out of Nakuru town.
The claims have elicited varied reactions from a section of Nakuru County leaders who spoke to our writer on Saturday.
Biashara ward MCA Stephen Kuria said that the allegations are not true and there is no Mungiki member in the county.
"For those who are spreading rumours that the county government is using Mungiki, I would like to tell them that Nakuru town is a Mungiki free-zone,” said Kuria.
However, Nakuru Street Hawkers Traders Association chairman Simon Ole Nasieku differed with Kuria, saying that the county boss used hooligans to evict them from the town.
"Governor Mbugua has hired Mungiki goons to evict us from the town. We are not safe at all," claimed Nasieku.
Nasieku’s sentiment is supported by the Nakuru East MP David Gikaria who said that on January 4 2015, he was in the town and was wondering why the police were not protecting residents from the harassment which was going on.
